Finding the best car - for you

We’re over half way through the year and there seem to be car awards galore! The results are similar and highlight cars that ‘win’ for a number of reasons. Safety and environmental friendliness seem to be the biggest selling points. So without further ado, here are the best, most talked about motors on the market ... up to now.

The overall winner

The overall winner, topping all of the groups, is the superb Audi A3 1.4 TFSI 122 SE with its sleek modern looks. I would like an Audi, probably for the same reason why so many people own them. They are sleek, offer style and are a dream to drive. The 1.4 engine is turbocharged making it quite a punchy number at approximately 2,200 rpm with its clinical gear shift and precise yet weighty clutch. The ride is firm but not uncomfortable and the steering is spot-on with no question about the grip either! The boot is bigger and the floor drops providing easier access so you can fit more in. The dash has a luxurious feel and there is a multi-media interface that is easy to navigate, especially once you have created your own personal shortcuts.

The 4X4 category goes to…

In terms of 4X4s, BMW X3 and Land Rover Discovery are winning. The X3 reports 42.2mpg from its 2.0 litre diesel engine which has a smooth drive and is pretty powerful for its size. The best hot hatch is the Ford Focus – what a machine! I personally love everything about this car: body kit, wheels and responsiveness – I could go on but I won’t! From 1999 to 2008 more registrations were made for this model than any other. In 2009 it was second, third in 2010, second again 2011 and back to third place in 2012. Those stats say it all! I think I’m going to arrange a test drive in one this weekend!

Special mention award

There are too many categories to go through but I think we need to give a special mention to Skoda. They were considered a laughing stock in the car manufacturing world in the 1980s, suffering such jokes as ‘how do you double the price of a Skoda? Fill it up with petrol!’ Now they are a force to be reckoned with on the rally circuit and also on the roads of the UK. The Skoda Yeti, Superb, Superb Estate and Octavia are all mentioned in the ‘best car’ listings of recent times. This is due to a style revamp of their cars and some brilliant advertising campaigns.
